Teaching is my thing. I love to do it and couldn't imagine my life without students, but in 2019, teaching became the primary source of my constant frustration. My time in the traditional classroom showed me that our children are struggling with basic reading and writing skills. They are quite literally in a fight for their lives. Reading and writing scores are at an all time low. More of my students read and wrote below their assigned grade-level than on grade-level. My accelerated students were barely reaching grade-level performance. Despite my best efforts, student growth was minimal at best. Teaching isn't just my passion, it's my gift; my calling. So the problem my students faced wasn't just theirs, it was mine as well.
The Solution
For three years, I'd been compelled to do something about the growing learning gap. Advocating for my students simply wasn't enough. When I wasn't knocked down by naysayers, I was defeated by my own lack of confidence. I'm not Joe Clark and I'm certainly not Superman. How could I fix a decades-old, nationwide problem?
